While western medicine traditionally focuses on treating disease and pathology, TCM has a more holistic approach and treats the whole ‘being’ rather than an individual condition. As such we can offer balance and restoration for many other aliments and conditions. TCM covers a broad range of practices which have been a staple part of the methodology for thousands of years and today incorporates: herbal medicine and herbal remedies, acupuncture, cupping, massage, exercise, and dietary therapy. Treatment is determined, based on the ‘pattern of disharmony’ (i.e the disease or ailment) perceived to be effecting the body.
TCM perceives the human body as a microcosm of the broader universe in which it exists. A fundamental tenet of TCM is the concept of “qi” (pronounced “chi”), which is translated as vital energy which to flows and circulate through specific pathways within the body known as meridians. These meridians are connected to various organs and facilitate the body’s physiological processes. Additionally, TCM incorporates concepts such as “yin” and “yang,” which represent the harmonious balance between opposing forces. It posits that disease arises from an imbalance between yin and yang. Furthermore, TCM considers the five elements (fire, earth, metal, wood, and water) and their role in elucidating the body’s functional mechanisms.
